Relevant MaterialThe T2202, T4A, and T1 General are essential Canadian tax documents that work together to determine a student's final tax liability or refund.

  • The T1 General is the main form individuals use to file their personal income tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • The T2202 and T4A are information slips that must be reported as part of completing the T1 General.
T2202: Tuition and Enrolment Certificate
The T2202 is an official tax receipt issued by designated educational institutions to students who have paid more than $100 in eligible tuition and related fees.
  • Significance: It is used to claim the federal tuition tax credit on the T1 General return. This is a non-refundable tax credit used to reduce the amount of income tax owed.
  • Usage:
    • Students must claim the credit on their own return first.
    • If the student has no tax payable, they can transfer a maximum of $5,000 of the current year's amount to a spouse, common-law partner, parent, or grandparent, or carry forward the unused amount to a future year.
  • Completing the T1: Information from the T2202 is used to complete the federal and provincial Schedule 11 forms, which calculate the eligible tax credit amount.
T4A: Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income
For students, the T4A slip primarily reports income from scholarships, bursaries, awards, and prizes.
  • Significance: This amount is generally considered income and must be reported on the T1 General return.
  • Usage: While most scholarships for full-time students are not taxable, they must still be reported on the T1 General form in the "other information" section. Other types of T4A income, such as certain grants or awards for part-time students, may be fully or partially taxable at the individual's marginal tax rate.
T1 General: Income Tax and Benefit Return
The T1 General is the main form used to compile all sources of income and all eligible deductions and credits to determine the final tax outcome.
  • Significance: It's the official document submitted to the CRA to file a personal tax return, calculate total income, determine tax liability, and apply for benefits.
  • The Combined Significance: The T2202 (a potential credit) and T4A (a potential source of income) are both crucial inputs for the T1 General. The T4A adds to your total income calculation, while the T2202 helps lower your tax bill (if applicable). Together, they provide a complete picture of a student's financial year for tax purposes.
